Getting Into A New Business? 5 Secrets To Effective Resume Writing

Effective resume writing can be a difficult task, especially when you don’t know what employers are looking for. If you want to create the most effective and professional looking resume, then you should follow these five simple secrets:

1. Consider the job and the business you are applying for. There are templates which are designed for specific types of jobs. If you are applying for a position as a graphic designer or illustrator, you may want to place emphasis on the fact that your resume is visually appealing. If you're shooting for a creative type position, a dull resume suggests that you're a pretty dull person. When applying for a writing position, you will want to give special attention to your spelling, grammar, and wordiness.

2. Something small and unique can set you apart from the rest. You will want to do something that will make your resume stand out. Whether that includes printing your resume on top of the line cardstock, laminating it, or adding a small inspiration quote to the corner, you should incorporate something mall and special which will make the employer remember your resume.

3. Keep it simple! You don’t want to include long, drawn out paragraphs in your resume. Although it is acceptable to use more than two pages, you should try your hardest to only use one. If you design or resume appropriately (be sure to make note of white space) you should be able to fit your resume onto one piece. When resume writing, if you keep in mind that you need to cut some space out, you should be able to draft it accordingly.

4. Utilize your friends as editors. Oftentimes, we will make writing mistakes which we simply can’t catch. We either think that the error in question is correct or we just skim past it. When we have another individual to review our work, we get an unbiased second opinion which can pinpoint uncaught mistakes and improve the overall appearance of your resume.

5. Keep it organized. If your timelines and dates for previous jobs are not set up in a chronological and organized manner, it gives employers the impression that you are not an organized person. So make sure and have your dates for previous employment and schools attended listed in proper order. Also, do not include jobs which you haven’t done in over ten years. When crafting a great resume remember to include work experience that is relatable to the position you're going for.

By following these 5 secrets to writing a great resume you will be able to apply to the various businesses you want. Remember that businesses get tons of applications each week so it is important to make your resume shine and to stand out. Businesses these days have tons of qualified people applying to work for them so it is critical for you to make sure that your resume is exactly what that business is looking for in order to get your foot in the door.
