The third tide of website hosting

The First Wave - ISP Wave

The first wave of website hosting started in the middle of 1990s. At the present ,there weren't really many web hosting firms. One part of ISP operation is the webhosting. Even only in USA,the number of ISPs had increased from a few dozens to a few thousands within only two years. Many analysts predicated that the consolidation of ISP industry was unavoidable. The future of the web hosting hasn't attracted much attention by the analysts. The web hosting clients for ISOs were most small to medium-sized agencies which could not provide have devoted Internet connection.

The Second Wave - One Plan hosting Wave

As large telecommunication companies entering into the ISP industry and the prevailing of broadband connection into both commercial and residential buildings, a few leading ISP, such as AOL had grabbed residential users from small ISP companies, and telecommunication companies had stolen or acquired commercial clients from small or regional ISP companies. Because of the economy of scale, ISPs couldn't compete with either AOL, Comcast or Qwest for Internet connection service. Most ISP companies were disappeared as fast as they were emerged.

From another point of view, the growth of the Web has pushed the second tide of the web hosting. The website hosting companies offer hosting service at a fraction of cost of what ISPs used to charge. Unlike the ISP web hosting, which is often customized for each customer in a way or another, the idea of hosting plan has helped hundreds of clients in hundreds of thousands to a few leading companies that can accommodate a few years. Nowadays, web hosting firms don't provide Internet connection service at all. It is incredible that a top company IBP never tried to become Web hosting companies to survive the inevitable consolidation of the ISP industry.
